The Dog’s Bollocks

Truth is like a dog’s bollocks – pretty obvious if you care to look.

Bolt’s Laws of Climate Change

1. Unusually warm weather does not prove global warming.

2. Unusually cold weather disproves global warming.

ABC OnlineWeather does not drive climate. Repeat three times daily until inflammation subsides. If symptoms persist, see a doctor.

    I invite people to visit our Web site and consider endorsing the Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change.

    Thanks very much!

    Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change

    We, the scientists and researchers in climate and related fields, economists, policymakers, and business leaders, assembled at Times Square, New York City, participating in the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change,

    Resolving that scientific questions should be evaluated solely by the scientific method;

    Affirming that global climate has always changed and always will, independent of the actions of humans, and that carbon dioxide (CO2) is not a pollutant but rather a necessity for all life;

    Recognising that the causes and extent of recently-observed climatic change are the subject of intense debates in the climate science community and that oft-repeated assertions of a supposed ‘consensus’ among climate experts are false;

    Affirming that attempts by governments to legislate costly regulations on industry and individual citizens to encourage CO2 emission reduction will slow development while having no appreciable impact on the future trajectory of global climate change. Such policies will markedly diminish future prosperity and so reduce the ability of societies to adapt to inevitable climate change, thereby increasing, not decreasing human suffering;

    Noting that warmer weather is generally less harmful to life on Earth than colder:

    Hereby declare:

    That current plans to restrict anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a dangerous misallocation of intellectual capital and resources that should be dedicated to solving humanity’s real and serious problems.

    That there is no convincing evidence that CO2 emissions from modern industrial activity has in the past, is now, or will in the future cause catastrophic climate change.

    That attempts by governments to inflict taxes and costly regulations on industry and individual citizens with the aim of reducing emissions of CO2 will pointlessly curtail the prosperity of the West and progress of developing nations without affecting climate.

    That adaptation as needed is massively more cost-effective than any attempted mitigation, and that a focus on such mitigation will divert the attention and resources of governments away from addressing the real problems of their peoples.

    That human-caused climate change is not a global crisis.

    Now, therefore, we recommend –

    That world leaders reject the views expressed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as popular, but misguided works such as “An Inconvenient Truth”.

    That all taxes, regulations, and other interventions intended to reduce emissions of CO2 be abandoned forthwith.

    Agreed at New York, 4 March 2008

    I’ll second that Jason. But I think this bloke above me has been sucking from the same sauce bottle as Bolt…

  4. […] grasp of the details of climate science and that they couldn’t make the distinction between weather and climate, or that they would cherry-pick from the available data to make their case. But I’ve been […]

  5. Wes George says:

    Climate change is a tautology. Climate, by definition, is always changing. A climate in stasis isn’t a climate but a gaseous atmosphere around a dead planet, i.e. Mars, Venus, et al.

    I suppose a clever bloke like you would be a big supporter of the remarkable feat of combining an oxymoron with a tautology.

    Stop Climate Change!

    If symptoms persist seek remedial adult literacy education.

  6. Editor says:

    Yes, Wes, climate is always changing. The $64 question is whether human activity is affecting additional climate change – and despite your certainty, it is certainly not a lay down misere.

    My take on it is little different. A simple challenge for you – explain why it is a good idea to continue adding 7 billion tonnes of CO2 annually to the atmosphere of a closed system, and why it is improbable that there won’t be any unintended consequences. The fact that doing something about it will inconvenience you is not a sufficiently scientific answer.

  7. wes george says:

    So why say climate change? If you mean Anthropogenically forced Global Warming,toe up to the line and say it. And we’ll debate it.

    “Climate change” is a political euphemism that is used to extend AGW guilt to every flood, every bush fire, every cyclone, every lahar and yes, even bloody snow storms.

    “Climate change” is Orwellian demagoguery which appropriates the weather as a political weapon against your rivals.

    It’s harebrained triumphalism to suggest that the climate, the most nonlinear complex system on the planet, has some optimum state and we clever little humans with our political bureaucracies are not only able to define what that state is, but mandate it through legislation.

    They laugh at the idiot in the White House because he was so guileless as to imagine by invading Iraq he could tame the nonlinear complex state of middle eastern politics. Now we have the NeoCons of climatology declaring a UN tower of Babel bureaucracy can “declare WAR on climate change” to deliver us perfect weather. Not too hot, not too cold, just right! All you have to do is relinquish your economic sovereignty to us and we’ll take care of ya!

    Oh, duh, sounds great to us! Here, let taxpayers write you a check! How much? Say, $5 trillion over the next decade? What a deal… Oh, btw, did you sign up China too? Huh? NO….Uh, may we have our economy refunded. please?

    So I would ask you, just what steady state, i.e. temperature, do you think the Earth’s thermostat should be set at? Do we get to vote on it? I vote for 18c, my partner likes 21c. The crocs in the lagoon say 35c is good.

    How do you propose to modify the nonlinearity of climate so that it jumps through hoops for you on command? You know, just like simple things do, like interest rates for instance?

    And once you get us to that optimum temperature, how do you propose to keep climate there rather than over shooting and making it too cold, or relenting and warming starts up again? These are serious questions. You better have an engineering solution on the table before you start in with the “science is settled” BS.

    Perhaps Parliament should just cut through all the red tape and outlaw drought while they’re at it! The Feds and states have done such a great job on the Murray/Darling and health care too, why not let the pollies mandate the state of the climate? Rudd’s up for it. Look at Fuelwatch, how clever is that?

    Oh, and I never said that it’s a “good idea to continue adding 7 billion tonnes of CO2 to atmosphere.” That’s your strawman, mate. I’m here to help you isolate the shocking absurdities that premise your paradigm.

    A life unexamined isn’t worth living, much less blogging.
