The Dog’s Bollocks

Truth is like a dog’s bollocks – pretty obvious if you care to look.

Gathering of the tribes at Port Fairy

Shane Howard’s haunting song, Tarerer, was inspired by the story of how the indigenous tribes would gather at the place we call Port Fairy at this time of the year when the eels return to the sea in mass migration. There would be feasting, corroborees, trading, marriages, and the political business of the tribal nation. This coming Labour Day weekend is the 31st Port Fairy Folk Festival, and our modern tribes, from Toorak society to the feral fringe, will gather to enjoy a celebration of all that is best in contemporary and traditional music and experience a palpable and joyful sense of community. All very life affirming. I imagine there might even be a few Howard jokes.

Slim will be there for about his 16th time, and can be found playing Dobro (resophonic slide guitar) for The Cornhuskers. So if you’re in Port Fairy, swing on by and say howdy.

Tickets sell out in a matter of days, back in November. You can often pick up surplus tickets on the streets at the Office in the Town Hall. Accommodation (camping at this stage) can be a bit harder these days. You can still buy camping passes on the street as well. There is also an on-line ticket exchange.

Even without a ticket there are 82 free performances over the four days in venues all around town, street markets, buskers, food and festivity. One of the finest music festivals in Australia.

See ya next week. Y’all come back, now y’hear!
