The Dog’s Bollocks

Truth is like a dog’s bollocks – pretty obvious if you care to look.

Don’t mention the War – is Howard losing it?

John Howard hasn’t been doing a very good job lately of not mentioning the War. As if it wasn’t going to be difficult enough with Dick Cheney’s upcoming visit, he has placed the issue front and centre across the world and national media with his intemperate remarks concerning Barack Obama and the US Democrats – the last place he would want it during an election year. Obama’s rejoinder “I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops on the ground now. And my understanding is that Mr. Howard has deployed 1,400. So if he’s ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest, he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them up to Iraq” certainly cuts to the heart of the matter and makes Howard’s support for the War on Terror look like the token political opportunism that it has always been.

The Australian media hasn’t pursued Howard over his decision that Australia would not be ‘surging’ with our allies. But he has now brought attention to our lack of support in the biggest way possible. If he is so gung ho about Iraq why aren’t we surging. Because he knows it wouldn’t wash in an election year (or probably any other for that matter). Howard has exposed his commitment to Iraq to the harsh spotlight of media attention and it looks more and more like a hollow sham. I would have thought the last thing Howard would want is to bring scrutiny to what has clearly become a civil war in which Al Qaeda is only a fringe player. Even the Chief of US Defence is more in line with Obama’s assessment than Howard’s.

Which raises the question, “Is Howard losing it?” Will Costello challenge? Time is running out either way. Howard has led us to this juncture, so I hope he stays on to face the music to either be vindicated in victory or humiliated in defeat. Anything else would be most un-Statesman-like for the Man of Steel.
